The project, developed following a design competition launched by the municipality, aims to reconfigure the pattern of public spaces in Lignano Pineta that overlook the sea. The site plays a strategic role in the urban, landscape, and tourism development of the seaside town. Although included in Marcello D’Olivo’s famous 1953 snake-shaped masterplan, it remains an unfinished space under private concession: a paved square used as a traffic hub and occasionally for public events. The proposal, in contrast to the current spatial uniformity, organizes the space into three distinct areas based on use, climatic conditions, and seasonality. It prioritises slow mobility and environmental sustainability. To emphasise the relationship with the sea, the waterfront is defined by two spaces that reconnect the urban fabric to the seafront. The different levels are connected by continuous and accessible pedestrian pathways. The Seaside Stage is a permeable paved surface that slopes down to the shoreline. Its edges are designed as stepped seating carved into the slope, creating a theatrical space with the sea as its backdrop. The Viewpoint Dune is a raised green permeable space overlooking the sea, designed as a park equipped with areas for play and performances, intended for year-round use. A new Shaded Urban Square has been planned in place of the current parking lot. It concludes the commercial strip and reconnects the pinewood with the urban fabric. The overall project is linked to the masterplan developed for the municipality, outlining a sustainable approach to climate change by enhancing the microclimate and providing protection against coastal erosion and wind impact through the formal design of the new waterfront.
